Why Do You Care?

from Fear The Flames (Album) by Brian Stone

/

about

This song was one of the first I wrote when I started as a solo artist 8 years ago. The subject was a job interview I had where the interviewer seemed more concerned about my beard than whether I could do the job (which I barely could). It went sensationally badly and they still offered me the job, which I turned down. It was a good decision. The song has been largely rewritten for the Twitter age where the tiniest inconsequential detail of someone else's life can become the subject of a rant.

lyrics

It’s like an itch you got to scratch, all those petty things
That shouldn’t matter to you. Why do you care?
But quick as a flash (quick as a flash), like a bull you’re seeing red
And you crash the Twitter china shop. And so the hatred spreads

So what’s the beef today? About someone else’s life
That shouldn’t matter to you. Why do you care?
Is it how we dress or look, that causes so much stress
It’s always been a puzzle to me, I must confess

Why should it matter to you, matter to you. Why do you care?
Why should it matter to you. Why do you care?
Why should it matter to you, matter to you Why do you care?
Why should it even matter to you. Why do you give a damn?

And now it’s living on the road, that’s got you in a stew
It shouldn’t matter to you. Why do you care?
I’ll keep myself to myself, if it’s all the same to you
And if you could do the same, see every point of view

Why don’t you care about the poor
Why don’t you care for those in need
Why don’t you care for refugees
Or for rising corp’rate greed
Try love and inclusivity
Tolerance equality
Love and truth and honesty
Yeah, We should care
